Giraffe - Manchester Airport Terminal One

Everybody loves going on holiday and if you’re going abroad your holiday usually starts at the airport. Whether it be 4am in the morning or 1pm in the afternoon most people are relaxing their belts and getting in to the holiday spirit.

I’m not one for ‘getting on’ the beer (or bottle of wine as I’ve seen before) at 4am in the morning but I am partial to an airport breakfast/brunch. Leeds airport is wank for this. Sorry for the rather uncouth language, but it sums it up quite perfectly to me. The breakfast options are limited and those that are available are expensive and quite frankly a rip off for the amount of food they serve you.

Manchester is a different story, depending on your terminal. Terminal one in Manchester airport is the closest us Northerners are going to get to Heathrow (which blows your mind if you’ve only ever been to Leeds airport). There are more shops that just Boots the Chemist and there are more food options than Burger King and the Airport’s own attempts at restauranteering. You won’t find many independents but you will find Giraffe.

Giraffe isn’t possibly somewhere I’d choose to dine in Leeds purely because there is so much else to find in Leeds but when you’re getting in holiday mode and want a good brunch that isn’t looking a bit dubious on the sausage side it is a winner.

My go to breakfast/brunch option is the Huveos Rancheros. You can chose whether to have your eggs scrambled (I made that mistake once and never again – egg snot yuck) or fried. It comes on a big plan tortilla and is topped with refried beans, avocado, chorizo and salsa. Note last time I ordered chips because I was feeling greedy. Chips weren’t needed.

D once ordered the full breakfast but saw the light last time and ordered the same as me. Not that there was anything wrong with the full breakfast but if we’re being honest it’s no Huevos Rancheros.

Giraffe in Manchester Airport comes fully equipped with the funny no-stabby knives to protect us all from the threat of a knife attack over breakfast or someone pocketing it and taking it on to the plane and trying to hijack it with the threat of a breakfast knife. No one is going to get anywhere with this thing.

Staff are very mindful that people have planes to catch and so they are quick at serving and bringing the bill to you. There is a handy screen in the restaurant so you can keep an eye out for your boarding gate being announced too.

Giraffe has made my trips to both Iceland and Copenhagen kick off to a great start and I can’t wait for our next adventure from this terminal.
