Primos - Leeds Corn Exchange


I've visted Primo's a few times but only ever for a cup of tea. It's a great place to sit and have a cup of tea as you can sit outside in the Corn Exchange and people watch. They also do massive cups of tea too in a cup and saucer!

This particular Saturday afternoon my friend and I were trying to think of somewhere we could have a quick bite, maybe a sandwich, we didn't want anything big as we were going out for a big meal that evening. We looked in a few sandwich and coffee shops but wasn't inspired by what we saw, we also wanted somewhere we could sit down and have a cup of tea too.

Review: The Lord Gascoinge (Hungry Horse) Garforth, Leeds


Another post from an eatery based in Garforth....

The Lord Gascoinge is a pub in Garforth, that has undergone many refurbs, new looks and owners, all in the attempt to 'refresh' and 'revamp' it (make it less rough around the edges...). This time they have gone for a more family friendly theme. The Gascoinge, as it was previously known, has this time been taken over by the chain 'Hungry Horse'. The food is cheap and it's very family orientated. They have a deal on every day of the week. This time I visited on a Thursday just to get out of the house... and avoid cooking.  On Thursdays the deal is that you buy a main from the 'big plate' menu and you get either a free dessert or a free starter.

The Blue Bicycle - York


So for Birthday Meal part two I wanted to go somewhere a bit different. I really like York as a city and there are some lovely places to go out for meals. The blue bicycle was suggested by a work colleague, the interesting menu and the fact that this place used to be a brothel really intrigued me.

It's about a 10-15minute stroll from the train station and although it appears to be on one of the quieter streets of York it's not far away from the hubbub of other restaurants and bars if you fancy a drink afterwards.

We pre-booked a week in advance to ensure that we could get a table on a Saturday night. The only reservations they could offer were 6.30pm and 9.00pm... We could have had a booth (bed - see further down) but there was a 2 hour cap on the table... and we don't like to be rushed. We decided to book the 6.30pm slot as the last train home is 11.15pm.

Aagrah - Garforth, Leeds


The Aagrah in Garforth has been there as far back as I can remember, I moved to Garforth when I was 6 which was 19 years ago and I remember it being there then. One of the main reasons I can remember it being there is because of the Aagrah Elephant. The Aagrah Elephant was a magnificent thing (in the eyes of a 6/7year old) it was about 10 foot tall (I think) and beautifully decorated. What made the elephant even more special is that it used to travel from Aagrah restaurant to Aagrah restaurant, so I used to eagerly look out of the car window as we drove past to see if the elephant was there. Unfortunately the Aagrah elephant no longer visits Garforth, I have heard rumours that the elephant was broken in transit? I have also heard that it now sits permanently outside another establishment? If you know please comment at the end of this post!

The Aagrah is about 5 minutes in the car from my house and I'm surprised I haven't been more. This time we were going for my Birthday Meal Number 1. We went on my actual birthday due to the short distance plus during in January they were running a 25% off your total bill promotion. Keep your eye out for this next year as it was on the previous January too.

The Weekly Bake Off: Fruitful Baking & Valentines Bakes


I hate wasting food, but I also like my fruit to be just ripe not overly ripe. I like bananas but they don't seem to last very long before they start to go brown and spotty. To accompany this weeks Weekly Bake off entry I thought I'd follow the theme of fruit in cake and make chocolate and banana heart shaped cakes... Valentines day is not far away after all.

Firstly though... here is my entry in this weeks bake off.

Farmhouse Orange Victoria Sandwich.

I think I should have let my cake cool a little longer, or perhaps put the cream on the bottom layer then put it in the fridge to let it harden before I put the top layer on? It seemed a bit sloppy but still tasted awesome. There isn't a massive amount of cream but you really don't need a thick layer of it (in my opinion) as the cream was really rich. I deviated from the recipe a little bit by spreading a layer of the fine cut marmalade on the base before adding any cream.
